6D5N Mount Murud Trekking

Mount Murud summit, which at 2,423m / 7,946ft is the highest sandstone mountain in Sarawak. Mountaineers can tackle Mount Murud (reasonable going). Lun Bawang tribe from Ba Kelalan and Kelabit tribe from Bario live at the foot of Mount Murud.

DAY 1 (L / D)

MIRI | BA KELALAN | APPLE LODGE

Fly from Miri to Ba Kelalan. Arrival at Ba Kelalan Airtsrip around midday and proceed to Apple Lodge. Lunch will served at the Lodge and you will have this afternoon free at leisure. In the evening, we will walk around the valley and visiting some of the Longhouse folk. The ethnic are Muruts and LunBawang. Dinner and overnight at the Lodge.

DAY 2 (B / L / D)

BA KELALAN | LEPO BUNGA | CHURCH CAMP

At 0700 am, early drive using 4X4 WD to Lepo Bunga. Start the climbing to Church Camp passing through the Golden Bridge. This is a very strenuous climb passing from lowland rainforest to the mossy forest of the summit. Pitcher plants, mosses and orchids abound at the higher elevations. The climb is along an unmaintained trail using tree roots and for foot and hand holds. Overnight at the Church camp, where temperature can drop to 6 celsius at night.

DAY 3 (B / L / D)

CHURCH CAMP | ROCK GARDEN | LONG REPUNG

Ascend and descend Murud Summit (the highest mountain in Sarawak-2434 meter) and take a break in the clouds. We still have three hours to go to Church Camp. First, we cross Rock Garden, a large sloping summit plain with orchids, in full bloom and a large variety of orchids. We keep on losing altitude till the last steep climb and arrive at Church. Then, trek to Long Repung (4-5 hours), the site of an old longhouse on a river bank surrounded by huge bamboo plants. En route it is possible to see rafflesia, orchids and pitcher plants. Overnight in jungle camp.

DAY 4 (B / L /D)

LONG REPUNG | PA LUNGAN LONGHOUSE

Early morning, we will continue our day long trekking. The first part or trip is a flat and an easier trek. Then, from top its will descend, crossing a couple of stream. A small patch of kerangas has the usual steno and reinwardtiana. Pa Lungan has less than 100 inhabitants, most of the young generation moved to Bario for school or working, which is a 3 hours walk per way and only return once at weekend. Overnight at Pa Lungan.

DAY 5 (B / L /D)

PA LUNGAN HOMESTAY | BARIO | D'PLATEAU LODGE

Arrive in Bario late afternoon and check into D'Plateau Lodge. After Lunch, walk to Bario Asal, the oldest Longhouse in the valley and meeting the communities. Many of the older generation in Bario still have pierced, elongated earlobes and wear traditional hats of rice stalks. The surrounding is full of ancient megaliths surprisingly almost similar to many British standing stones. We have a full day to explore Bario and its fascinating culture before we retire for a night.

DAY 6 (B)

DEPARTURE

Breakfast at the lodge,free at leisure until pick up for Airstrip transfer and flown back to Miri.
