Damai Peninsula, Kuching: Must Go Places

The Peninsula is located about 35 km north of Kuching, at the west mouth of the Santubong River and extends northwards and dominated by the 810-metre Gunung

Santubong. This peninsula is always associated with the legendary Puteri Santubong (Santubong's Princess) and Puteri Sejinjang (Sejinjang's Princess), and traditional Kampung Santubong at the foothill of Mount Santubong stand as a witness to this myth. Many legends, there are several versions, the most popular is said that the mountain was formed when mythical Princess Santubong was speared by her jealous sister, Princess Sejinjang. Falling over, she gave the mountain its distinctive profile, like a pregnant belly.

Mount Santubong:

Mount Santubong (2700 feets) and about 3.5 km to summit, Mount Santubong is situated at the Santubong/Damai Peninsula, its provide a spectacular backdrop for Damai Beach, Sarawak Cultural Village and Buntal areas; which could be viewed from Kuching City as well. Soon after the junction to Santubong Village, there are Sarawak Forest Corporation (SFC) Warden Office which look after the Santubong National Park. The Santubong Park Office register and managed the Santubong National Park as well the Mount Santubong trails / climbing. Ascending the peak may take about 3-4 hours for healthy able body of an adult. The climbing may strenuous at final park of the trails. The climber have to bring own packed/canned foods. Advisable to use mountain guide. Picnic area / camp area is available near the waterfall not far from the Warden Office. If you wish to stay overnight at the peak, the temperature at night may fall between 13 C - 17 C and please bring a good coat.

Santubong Beach and Kampung Santubong:

The village of kampung Santubong is located at the mouth of Santubong river, mainly Malay traditional fishing village and according to history, the first landing site for explorer from Brunei Sultanate (the grave of Sultan Tengah from Brunei) is located at the junction near the entrance to Santubong village. Most of the villager now working at the nearby resort or in Kuching city, thanks to good road connection compare to last time that using boat and river as primary means of transportation. However, some fishing still goes on, and the daily catch is still sold every morning/afternoon at the quayside and some two or three Chinese-run grocery stores and a coffee shop.

Damai Sentral:

The Damai Central, situated on a 3.5 hectare land, sandwich between the internationally known Damai Beach Resort and Damai Puri Resort & Spa. This multi-purpose complex is built in Sarawak multi-ethnic concept design, its sited on a coastal land fronting the South China Sea.. The open design concept of this complex is taking full advantage of the natural ambiance of sun, sand and sea, with a backdrop of jungle greenery and mountain landscape. At 40 minutes by road, it is the nearest beach from Kuching city and draw huge crowd during week end.
